Each year, Aloft at Hermès welcomes young contemporary artists invited by curator Emi Eu to present works specially conceived for the space. The wooden sculptures of Ranjani Shettar, the immersive floral motifs of Shinji Ohmaki, and the creatures lost in Flavia Da Rin’s enchanted forest drew our attention to the fragile beauty of the natural world. Stories of origin and of belonging were evoked and blended with one another in Rei Sato’s recreation of her parents’ café, in the tale of the prodigal son told by Christine Ay Tjoe, and in the personal photographs of Luis Téran. Ming Wong recreated the magic of Luchino Visconti’s films, while the video works of Joo Choon Lin and Yeondoo Jung looked to intensify our perception of our environment, and Heman Chong explored questions of endings and beginnings. Nadim Abbas and Stanley Wong presented projects that revealed new ways of thinking about the meaning of home, while Aiko Tezuka and Ran Hwang turned their attention to the question of materiality in the digital age. After a year-long renovation, the space re-opened in 2016 for a year of exhibitions on the theme of the horizon: Dawn Ng’s juxtaposition of reflective panels and pastel-coloured blocks and Agathe de Bailliencourt’s hand-painted pebbles opened horizons that were as broad as they were sensitive.
Aloft at Hermès exhibitions, 2008–2016
Opened in Singapore in 2007, Aloft at Hermès (formerly Third Floor) has welcomed numerous artistic projects specially conceived for the space. Between 2008 – when the gallery joined the programme of the newly created Fondation d’entreprise Hermès – and 2016, sixteen artists from different backgrounds were invited to create solo exhibitions at Aloft at Hermès. An array of different forms and ideas have been explored in response to annual themes devised by curator Emi Eu.
