    An international programme supporting photography
Francois-Xavier Gbre
Reorienting our gaze, exploring new territories, and transcending borders: contemporary photography is a powerful force that helps us discover our world anew. In a society saturated with images, it is increasingly important to support those who undertake deep and intensive work to offer original points of view. This is why the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès is reinforcing its support for contemporary photography by launching the Latitudes programme, which each year will enable a photographer to produce an original series of work.

Drawing its name from a geographical concept, the Latitudes programme reflects the Foundation’s commitment to promoting artists working on scenes that lack international visibility. Renewing its long-standing partnerships with the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris and the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès inaugurated this new programme of support for contemporary photography in 2024.

Latitudes builds on, reinvents and expands Immersion, a French-American Photography Commission, a programme that was launched in 2014 and based on the principle of alternating residencies between France and the United States. With Latitudes, the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès, the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson and the ICP will select a country for a two year-cycle. Photographers from this country will be invited by a renowned mentor to submit their projects. A jury made up of representatives from the three institutions will then meet to study the submissions and select an annual laureate.

The selected photographer receives a grant to produce an original series of work in the chosen country, which will be exhibited in Paris at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, before travelling to the ICP in New York, and finally to the laureate’s home country. To further promote the work of the photographer, a publication dedicated to their work will be made in collaboration with Fondation d'entreprise Hermès. By promoting photographers from other latitudes, this new programme seeks to open our eyes and broaden our horizons.

In 2024, Côte d'Ivoire became the first country to be selected for a two-year cycle.
