At the start of the 2020 academic year, a group of young people began their professional training in dance or theatre, with the support of the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès as part of the Artists in the Community bursary scheme. Three years later, they are now embarking upon the first steps of their careers. To present the work of this cohort, the Foundation and the Lyon cultural centre SUBS, have commissioned Marlène Saldana and Jonathan Drillet, a duo known for their offbeat and inventive tone, to work with these young performers on a postgraduation project. The resulting piece, ‘Sweat, Glitter and Moolah’, is a bold, multidisciplinary format that explores the relationship between success and achievement through the eyes of these twenty young talents.

Whether writers, choreographers, dancers, costume designers or technicians, they are all preparing to enter the world of the performing arts upon completion of their training at one of the nineteen dance and theatre schools with which the Foundation has partnered. What better time to reflect upon the notions of 'success' and 'achievement' that are inseparable components of every artistic career? Under the artistic direction of actor, dancer and performer Marlène Saldana and actor, author and director Jonathan Drillet, and with the support of peers from a variety of disciplines, these twenty young professionals have devised an itinerant performance in which they can freely express their expectations and their desires for different forms of fulfilment at the threshold of their careers.

For the duo overseeing these performers’ creative process, the aim was simple: "Just as Mexicans celebrate death, this piece is about celebrating the end of the bursary and welcoming the future and its uncertainty with open arms." This is how they conceived a three-hour itinerant performance that will take place simultaneously in four different locations within Les SUBS in Lyon. Audiences will be free to move around and experience this hybrid form with its original, joyful, and at times, irreverent overtones. The young graduates will perform a continuous programme of singing and dancing, as well as a live radio broadcast and even a 'pirate' programme based on their existing personal projects.

Following on from ‘Panorama’, which was presented at the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale in Paris in 2022, ‘Sweat, Glitter and Moolah’ will allow audiences at Les SUBS to discover this second cohort of gifted artists to have received support from the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès as part of its Artists in the Community bursary programme. Over two successive evenings, this performance will showcase the collective talent of these twenty individuals while serving as a veritable springboard for their individual careers.
