In 2019, the Skills Academy adopts a new theme that is as diverse as it is fascinating: textiles. The fourth edition of this programme dedicated to the exploration of artisanal savoir-faire also marks a turning point and an increase in scope. Whilst maintaining its original focus on the transmission of knowledge, exploration and practice of different materials, the Academy will pay greater attention to major economic and social issues.

Since 2014, the Skills Academy has endeavoured to bring together the transmission of skills with the exploration of techniques, and to blend practical applications with prospective work. For its fourth edition, twenty-three selected professionals are participating in an eleven-month long programme from January to November 2019. Whether designers, textile artisans or textile engineers, they are all looking to enrich their training and skills in this area.

Where do natural and artificial fibres come from? What are the historical, symbolic and cultural dimensions of these materials, and how can an understanding of them allow us to reconsider the present and the future of textile savoir-faire? Exploring textiles and the creative and craft techniques associated with them opens up an essential aspect of human history.

Under the pedagogical direction of guest designer matali crasset the Academy participants will share and enrich their knowledge through a series of conferences (in French, open to the public, reservation required, see link below) and master classes with experts. In parallel, they will improve and explore their practices through a workshop in several phases. Together, they will develop a prospective and experimental project around a subject related to this year’s theme of textiles – a theme that raises social and environmental questions for our world and the world of tomorrow.
