A simple title that belies a highly complex artistic undertaking, "une maison" (“a house”) is a hybrid theatre piece in which performers enter into resonance with a suspended, mobile lighting structure. With this work, choreographer and artist Christian Rizzo continues his compelling exploration of the inscription of bodies in space.

In Christian Rizzo’s une maison, a monumental, mobile structure made of fluorescent lights hangs over the stage, and functions as the architecture, the scenography and the light source of this piece. It hovers above the performers, illuminating and sheltering them. The space it defines is not one of dwelling but rather a collective territory, open to movement and conducive to the emergence of fictions.

“There are houses that we happen upon, houses that we build, houses in which we host guests, and houses that we leave behind,” Rizzo reminds us. In this highly plastic and visual piece, fourteen dancers make up a protean family in which encounters and ruptures play out, and where different solitudes come together to form a community. With the stage covered by a layer of earth, the titular house also becomes a space of ritual and festivity.

This 2019 creation by Rizzo was directly supported by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès. In doing so, the Foundation reaffirms its ongoing commitment to the choreographer’s visual and plastic approach to performance, having previously supported his work as part of New Settings 2016, where he presented the installation Avant la nuit dernière in the Hôtel-Dieu hospital during the Nuit Blanche.
